What Is a DOT Number? Everything You Need to Know
A USDOT number is a unique identifier assigned by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to every commercial motor vehicle operator engaged in interstate commerce. Think of it as your carrier's federal ID number. It is used to track safety information, audit results, crash data, and inspection records in a single, centralized database.
Who Needs a DOT Number?
Any company that operates commercial motor vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce must have a USDOT number. This applies to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 pounds or more, vehicles designed to transport more than 8 passengers for compensation (or 15+ without compensation), and any vehicle transporting hazardous materials in quantities requiring placarding. Many states also require a DOT number for intrastate operations, so even local carriers may need one.
DOT Number vs. MC Number
While a DOT number identifies the carrier for safety monitoring purposes, an MC (Motor Carrier) number is an operating authority number required for for-hire carriers that transport regulated commodities across state lines. A carrier typically needs both: the DOT number for safety tracking and the MC number for operating authority. Private carriers hauling their own goods usually need only a DOT number. Brokers and freight forwarders also receive MC numbers but do not necessarily need a DOT number if they do not operate vehicles.
How to Get a DOT Number
You can register for a USDOT number online through the FMCSA's Unified Registration System (URS). The process typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes and requires your business details, vehicle information, type of cargo, and insurance details. There is no fee for the DOT number itself, though operating authority (MC number) filings carry a $300 processing fee. Once issued, your DOT number must be displayed on both sides of every commercial vehicle you operate.
How to Look Up a DOT Number
You can look up any active carrier's DOT number right here on Carrier Lookup. Simply search by company name, DOT number, or MC number to access the carrier's safety record, operating status, fleet size, crash history, and inspection data. Brokers, shippers, and compliance teams use DOT number lookups to vet carriers before awarding freight.
DOT Number Renewal
DOT numbers must be updated biennially (every two years) through the FMCSA's online system. Failure to update can result in your DOT number being deactivated and potential fines if you continue to operate. Your update year is based on the last digit of your DOT number. Keeping your registration current ensures shippers and brokers can verify your active status through tools like Carrier Lookup.
